Since its inception in 2002, El Pomar’s Forum for Civic Advancement has been a cornerstone of civic engagement in the Pikes Peak region. Dedicated to enhancing the civic health of our community, it has consistently provided a platform for meaningful conversation and debate on pressing public policy issues. By bringing together speakers, elected officials, candidates, and community leaders, Forum for Civic Advancement has fostered vibrant civic dialogue that is essential for a healthy democracy.

Over the years, Forum has tackled a wide array of topics through its debates. For instance, the 2023 Colorado Springs Mayoral Runoff Debate, co-hosted with KOAA News 5, The Gazette, and the Colorado Springs Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, featured candidates Yemi Mobolade and Wayne Williams. This event provided a critical platform for the candidates to discuss their visions for the city’s future, addressing key issues such as economic development, public safety, and infrastructure.
Most recently, on October 15, 2024, Forum hosted the Congressional District 5 Debate featuring Democratic candidate River Gassen and Republican candidate Jeff Crank. Moderated by KOAA News 5’s Alasyn Zimmerman and supported by The Gazette, this debate was a significant event for our community. Candidates engaged in a robust discussion on challenging local issues that directly impact Colorado Springs, as well as broader national concerns. This debate exemplified Forum’s commitment to fostering informed civic dialogue and providing voters with the information they need to make educated decisions.
By hosting debates, Forum helps to demystify the political process and make it more accessible to the average citizen. This is particularly important in local elections, where voter turnout is often lower than in national contests. Earlier this year, Forum hosted a discussion on Attainable Housing which brought together local experts to discuss the challenges posed by the rising cost of living in Colorado Springs. It also partnered with Rocky Mountain PBS to promote civil discourse through a screening of the film “Undivide Us,” which showcased Americans’ ability to hear others’ opinions while still retaining their own. Last year, Forum hosted the 2023 Forum on Fentanyl where local leaders and experts addressed the fentanyl crisis in El Paso County. Through these diverse events, Forum continues to foster important conversations and address critical issues in the community.
