Matt Carpenter, Mike Buth, and Connie Rickard all recently reached a major milestone at El Pomar Foundation, having each dedicated 25 years of their careers to the organization and contributed significantly to its mission and growth. Their journeys offer a shared and valuable perspective on the Foundation’s evolution and impact over the past quarter-century.

After a distinguished career in the Air Force, Matt joined El Pomar Foundation with aspirations for a political career. A chance breakfast meeting with then Colorado Springs Mayor, Mary Lou Makepeace, led to her encouraging Matt to apply for the Foundation’s Fellowship. From first joining the Fellowship Class of 1999 to now serving as the Chief Operating Officer, Matt has witnessed many changes within the organization. Despite these changes, El Pomar’s mission has remained steadfast.

Matt shared, “Because of the Penroses’ broad nature and interest in serving the people of Colorado, there is amazing flexibility of the Trustees to respond in an effort to meet community needs through donor intent.”

One of the most valuable lessons Matt has learned at El Pomar is the importance of listening, which is exemplified by the Foundation’s distinctive approach to genuinely engaging and supporting the people of Colorado. Matt’s journey at El Pomar has been marked by continuous learning and growth, driven by the Foundation’s commitment to its mission and values.

After moving from Hawaii to Colorado and transitioning out of the Coast Guard, Mike discovered El Pomar through a recommendation from his wife’s family. He started as a facilities worker and steadily advanced to his current role as Vice President and Director of Historic Properties. Over the past 25 years, Mike has contributed to significant projects, including the Penrose Heritage Museum relocation and expansion in 2004, the Hill Climb Experience installation in 2014, and recent enhancements and refurbishments at Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. Guided by mentors such as Bill Hybl and the late Rob Hilbert, Mike has embraced numerous growth opportunities that have significantly contributed to his personal and professional development. He stresses the importance of a supportive and collaborative culture.

“You have to have processes in place to move forward… I think culture is more important… If everyone buys into the mission, then everyone is on the same team, and the team wins.”

Mike’s experiences demonstrate that a unified team leads to organizational success. El Pomar Foundation has cultivated this positive culture, significantly benefiting Mike over his 25 years of service.

Connie’s journey began unexpectedly during her transition from public accounting, thanks to a recommendation from former Trustee, Brenda Smith. Over the years, Connie has taken on a variety of roles, reflecting her versatility and commitment to the Foundation. Currently serving as Investment Analyst and Assistant Controller in the Investment Office, Connie’s responsibilities over the last 25 years have included overseeing the fine arts collection, assisting with historical archives, managing operations at Will Rogers Shrine, leading Investment Challenge for Fellows, and now being deeply involved with the Garden City Company. Connie is particularly proud of her contributions to setting up the financial and budget systems, modernizing the investment processes, and transitioning the Foundation’s finances to more advanced technology. Her efforts have been pivotal in advancing the Foundation’s operations. Looking ahead, Connie reflected on her desire for the Foundation to continue to widely share stories of its good work.

“El Pomar used to be the best-kept secret in the community. We gave grants and had our name on things, but not many people knew about us. Now, we’re promoting our work and reaching out across the state. I love our regional programs, making small communities more aware of our efforts. I hope we continue to make an impact and remain outward facing.”

Each found their way to the Foundation through a recommendation and though they had unique individual journeys, together, Matt, Mike, and Connie embody the spirit of dedication and service that defines El Pomar Foundation. Their reflections on their 25-year careers provide a window into the Foundation’s enduring commitment to the current and future well-being of the people of Colorado.
